Dear Ms. Via:

This is in response to your letter dated December 28, 2001, concerning the proper shipping name for acetone under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).  Specifically, you ask whether you may use the shipping name “Paint related material (UN 1263)” to describe acetone.

The answer is no.  Generic shipping descriptions (e.g., Paint related material) are appropriate for materials not specifically listed by technical name in the § 172.101 Table.  Acetone is specifically listed by name in the § 172. 101 Table.  Therefore, the appropriate description for acetone is “Acetone, 3, UN1090, PG II.”.  I apologize for any misunderstanding regarding this issue, I hope it has not caused you any inconvenience.  I hope this satisfies your request.

Sincerely,
