PI-82-0111

                                                                          12/6/82

NAME OF PERSON:  George Mavris, Badger Pipe Line

SUBJECT:  Inspection of Welds on Slip-on Flanges

DIGEST:

Mr. Mavris questioned what, if any, nondestructive testing is required for welds on slip-on flanges.  They plan to use them in a spool for repair of line or at a tie-in.

I talked to Bill Gloe on this.  He said that visual inspection would be the best method, actually about the only method.  As far as establishing a procedure for the welding, the making and testing of a fillet weld per API 1104 would be satisfactory.  A flange does not have to be used for the procedure qualification.  A sleeve of similar thickness and material meeting the criteria of the essential variables of Section 2 (1104) could be welded and tested.

CONCLUSION:  Notified operator of above on 12/9/82.
