Dear Mr. Pearce:

Your letter of May 17, 1973, asks whether the pipeline marking regulations of this Department
require that the direction of fluid flow be shown.

The marking requirements for gas transmission lines are stated in §192.707 of Title 49 Code of
Federal Regulations, and the requirements for liquid pipelines transporting hazardous materials
and petroleum products in §195.410. Neither of these regulations require direction of flow to be
shown.

For your information, copies of §§192.707 and 195.410 are enclosed. If we can be of further
assistance, please call on us.

Sincerely,

/signed/

Joseph C. Caldwell
Director
Office of Pipeline Safety
