Dear Mr. Boydston:
This will acknowledge receipt of your letter dated April 17, 1972. Your specific question regarding the Federal gas pipeline safety standards inquired whether a compressor with nodular iron cylinder construction rated at 1600 psig would comply with the regulations.
The Federal gas pipeline safety standards do not specify the material for any part of the compressor nor do they specify the rated pressure of the compressor for any specific material. It is the responsibility of the operator to provide a properly designed compressor which will maintain its structural integrity under temperature and environmental conditions encountered, and which will be chemically compatible with the gas transported and other materials in the compressor. These requirements are contained in Section 192.53 of Federal minimum gas pipeline safety regulations (49 CFR Part 192). Enclosed is a copy of Part 192.
We trust that this will answer your specific question. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely,
/signed/
Joseph C. Caldwell
