Dear Mr. Brown:

Thank you for your letter of November 12, 1970, requesting information with regard to
requirements for construction, operation and maintenance for municipal gas system under the
Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968.

We are enclosing a copy of 49 CFR, Part 192, Transportation of Natural and Other Gas by
Pipeline; Minimum Safety Standards. An amendment has been published, Filing of Inspection and
Maintenance Plans, under 49 CFR, Section 192.17, a copy of which is enclosed. No guide lines
have been developed other than those contained within the regulation, at this time. It is hoped
that we will able to develop minimum requirements for plans of inspection and maintenance after
we have been able to review and study the first submissions of annual reports pursuant to Section
192.17, which are due no later than February 1. 1970.

Thank you for your interest in pipeline safety.

Sincerely,'

/signed/

Joseph C. Caldwell
Director, Acting
Office of Pipeline Safety
