Dear Mr. Winkler:

This is in response to your faxed correspondence and subsequent telephone conversation with Ms. Joan McIntyre, a member of my staff, concerning the hyphenation of a proper shipping name. Specifically, you asked if the proper shipping name uSodium Hydrogendifluorideu may be hyphenated between "Hydrogenll and lldifluoride" on a shipping paper.

The answer is yes. The use of a hyphen to divide a proper shipping name is permissible. (See 49 CFR 172.101(c) (2).) As set forth in § 172.201(a) (2), a shipping description must be legible and in English. The use of a punctuation mark in a proper shipping name may not reduce effectiveness.

I hope this information is helpful. Please contact this office if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Hattie L. Mitchell, Chief
