Ref. No. 08-0126

Dear Mr. King:

This responds to your letter requesting clarification of the segregation requirements for certain explosives under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). Specifically, you ask whether an explosive item classed as a Division 1.4D may be transported on the same transport vehicle as detonators.

The answer is yes. Except as otherwise specified, the provisions of § 177.848(g)(3)(iv) apply to detonators transported on the same transport vehicle with Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 material. An explosive item classed as a Division 1.4D may be transported on the same transport vehicle as a detonator.

I trust this satisfies your inquiry. Please contact us if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Hattie L. Mitchell
