Dear Mr. Hendrickson:
Thank you for your letter of October 30, 1970, requesting an interpretation of 49 CFR, Section
192.199(g).
You are correct that one method of compliance is to locate a regulator and pressure limiting
device in separate vaults if below grade or separated by a reasonable distance if above grade.
However, there may be other means of accomplishing this result which may be appropriate or
desirable in a particular situation.
The problem of a long control line on a monitor regulator is recognized but there are steps that
can be taken to provide a protection for the control line; such as, locating the control line in the
same ditch and slightly below the main line or using heavy wall pipe for the control line.
