Dear Mr. Yellin:
Thank you for your letter of August 23, 1971, requesting clarification regarding "the acceptability
of vessels and equipment, manufactured under the ASME code, for unfired pressure vessels and
code stamped for use in and around crude oil and product pipeline pumping stations."
Your question is, "...are ASME code stamped items, such as the two mentioned above, acceptable
for use providing the design pressures are within the working pressures of the facilities, and the
vessels protected against over pressure by suitable relief devices?"
The answer to your question is "yes". You will find the regulations that specifically apply to your
question in 49 CFR, Sections 192.53, 192.153, 192.225 and 192.227.
We hope that this information will furnish you with the needed clarification, but if you have
further questions, contact us.
Sincerely,
Joseph C. Caldwell
Acting Director
Office of Pipeline Safety
