Dear Mr. Martin:

This is in response to your letter requesting information regarding the transportation of cryogenic liquids such as nitrogen.  Specifically, you requested information pertaining to the regulations that govern the transportation of such materials.

The transportation of hazardous materials in commerce is governed by the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).  These regulations include but are not limited to packaging, shipping papers, marking, labeling, and placarding of hazardous materials transported in commerce.  Information regarding the HMR may be obtained at the following URL: http://hazmat.dot.gov., or to obtain a hard copy of the HMR please contact:
