On May 7, 2019, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced a public meeting scheduled for June 17, 2019, to solicit input on the development of the 2020 edition of the Emergency Response Guidebook.The ERG is a guidebook intended for use by first responders during the initial phase of a transportation incident involving dangerous goods/hazardous materials and has been updated and published every four years.

On May 1, 2019, PHMSA issued a notice to pipeline operators that it does not intend to take any enforcement action relating to the requirements of American Petroleum Institute's (API) Specification 5L (Spec 5L) “Specification for Line Pipe” 45th edition, provided that API's new standard: API Specification 5L, “Specification for Line Pipe,” 46th edition (April 2018, effective May 1, 2019), is used in its place.
