The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) today finalized amendments to the Hazardous Materials Regulations which remove the requirement, while still allowing, for certain High Hazard Flammable Unit Trains (HHFUT) to operate using electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) braking systems. The Department's action is based on a Congressional requirement to conduct an updated Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA).

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) ruled on a petition submitted by the National Tank Truck Carriers Association. To ensure public safety, maintain security, and reduce delays, PHMSA finds that California's meal and rest break requirements are preempted for all operators of motor vehicles transporting hazardous materials.

WASHINGTON –The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced today that the two agencies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will expedite coordination between the agencies during the permit application review process for proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities.

The Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) seeks public comment on existing class location requirements for natural gas transmission pipelines at 49 CFR part 192, specifically as they pertain to actions operators are required to take following class location changes due to population growth near the pipeline.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) will be conducting a public meeting for the Pipeline Research and Development Forum. PHMSA periodically conducts such a forum to generate a national research agenda that fosters solutions to the many challenges with pipeline safety and protecting the environment.
