PHMSA Request for Information on Safety Devices (Hazardous Materials)
PHMSA is accepting comments as it begins to develop a national policy for safety devices. Safety devices, as defined by the Hazardous Materials Regulations, include air bag inflators, air bag modules, seat belt pretensioners, and other articles containing pyrotechnic substances or hazardous materials of other classes and are used in vehicles, vessels, or aircraft to enhance safety.
PHMSA has continued to see advancements in technologies for articles containing hazardous materials that have been submitted to PHMSA requesting an approval or special permit to be transported as safety devices and is requesting information or data from stakeholders regarding the classification, testing, and conditions for transportation of these devices.
Individuals interested in submitting comments can do so on or prior to August 10, 2020.
For more information, including instructions on how to submit comments, see PHMSA's Notice on Request for Information on Safety Devices in the Federal Register.
