A pipeline system is a network of pipes and other components connected together to transport gaseous or liquid products from a source to a customer or other destination. Depending on the product and the type of pipeline system, the distances transported may be very short or very long.
In the United States there are nearly 2.1 million miles of pipelines transporting oil, natural gas, and other
hydrocarbons. These pipelines range in size from 1/2 inch to 60 inches in diameter. Larger diameters of pipe are capable of transporting greater volumes of product.
