DOT ERG 2004 for Windows - README Version 1.0 Contents ======== * System Requirements * Installation * Upgrades * Uninstalling * User Registration * Known Issues * Release History * ERG Overview * Disclaimer System Requirements =================== A personal computer with Windows 98 or later (Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows ME; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista) Note that the ERG is only tested on Windows XP and Vista. - At least 128 MB of RAM is recommended. - At least 20 MB of hard disk space is required; more will be required if the Microsoft .NET Framework must be installed. The ERG is dependent on the Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0. The ERG setup program will install this system dependency automatically if it detects it does not already exist on your computer. Its installation requires administrative privileges and 280 MB of hard disk space. Installation ============ Simply execute the setup program, ERG_Windows_Setup.exe, and follow the instructions. If the Microsoft .NET Framework dependency indicated above is not detected on the target computer, it will be automatically installed. If the ERG setup was downloaded (as opposed to a CD distribution), then this dependency must first be downloaded; again this will be performed automatically, and only if necessary. If the .NET Framework dependency gets installed, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you verify you have the latest updates for it by running Windows Update (http://update.microsoft.com). In particular, service pack and security updates may be available. NOTE WELL: If the Microsoft .NET Framework needs to be downloaded, be aware that it is large (over 22 MB), and thus the download may take some time, as will its installation. If desired, the Microsoft .NET Framework V2.0 can be manually downloaded and installed from the following site before attempting to install the ERG: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en Upgrades ======== If a previous version of the ERG already exists on your PC, it will be automatically upgraded during the installation of the new version, including retaining any user information (preferences and saved searches). Uninstalling ============ Uninstall the ERG using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. Note that the ERG may have resulted in the installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0. Uninstall this only if you are sure no other programs depend on it. Known Issues ============ The ERG will not display properly unless the normal (default) setting is used for the DPI (Windows XP) or font size (Windows 2000) option. If the right and bottom edges of ERG windows are being cut off, then verify this setting as follows: 1) In an open area of your Windows desktop, right-click and select Properties from the resulting pop-up menu. 2) Select the Settings tab. 3) Press the Advanced button. 4) Windows XP: you should see a "DPI setting" drop-down list. The "Normal size" option must be selected for ERG to display properly. Windows 2000: you should see a "Font Size" drop-down list. The "Small Font" option must be selected for ERG to display properly. Release History =============== Application v1.0: initial public release DOT ERG 2004 for Windows Overview ================================= The Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) was developed jointly by the US Department of Transportation, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SCT) for use by firefighters, police, and other emergency services personnel who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a transportation incident involving a hazardous material. It is primarily a guide to aid first responders in (1) quickly identifying the specific or generic classification of the material(s) involved in the incident, and (2) protecting themselves and the general public during this initial response phase of the incident. DOT ERG 2004 for Windows is a software version of the 2004 edition of the ERG. Distributed by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, it's development was provided by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). For downloads and additional information, see http://hazmat.dot.gov/pubs/erg/gydebook.htm. For comprehensive hazardous substance data and identification support, see NLM's Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER): http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov/.
