The goal of the Hazardous Materials Safety's Research & Development program is to develop and implement safety solutions that enhance the Agency's safety mission.
The staff of the Research and Engineering Branch performs all tasks associated with managing the R&D Program within the Office of Hazardous Material Safety. The R&D projects are conducted by a number of internal and external research partners, and in cooperation with other Office of Hazardous Safety Divisions. They prepare statements of work and requests for proposals. They develop milestones and meeting deliverables from laboratory testing, to piloting, to field implementation. They provide technical support within the R&D Program to identify potential emerging risks and challenges to the safe transport of hazardous materials and provides fiscal oversight of concurrent diverse projects within their areas of responsibility.
